I have been inspired by
, , , and to give this writing thing a go. Thanks particularly to Matt, Ben, Clare and Sam for demonstrating what courage looks like by writing about topics that show your vulnerability, your honesty, your challenges, and which provide an insight into your lives.I don’t know where this will lead but I do have visions of, maybe, one day, writing a book that might inspire others in the same way that so much of what I have read over the years has inspired and motivated me. Maybe this entry, and the ones that follow, will eventually lead to something that can be cobbled together as a book?
My initial thoughts. I’m a keen runner and spend quite a few hours every week running around various parts of the ACT. I do a lot of thinking when I am running. I wish I could work out how better to capture those thoughts because I am sure that I have solved many of the world’s problems whilst pounding the pavement, but by the time my heart rate has recovered and my stretching is done, my brain has lost all of its creativity. So this blog or newsletter or whatever it ends up being will be my attempt to capture some of those random thoughts and commit them to words on ‘paper’ in the hope so that they might help me and possibly help others to make sense of this crazy world.
I read a post from
a while ago where he wrote about over-thinking his writing and trying to be a perfectionist (you can read it here). I can relate. I have been rehearsing this ‘First Post’ for months while out running but I have never come up with the perfect prose. And then I realised that one of my mantras at work is ‘Perfection is the enemy of good enough’. Why am I not applying that mantra in my personal endeavours? So my apologies, you are now reading ‘good enough’.Most Saturdays I participate in Parkrun and during the welcome speech given by the Run Director I always hear ‘who is here for the first time?’. Those people always get a good cheer. Occasionally the Run Director asks the more important question ‘who is here for the second time?’ Showing up for the second round is important. So what’s going to bring you back to read my second post?
I would like you to come back to read short stories about what I have learned through my career and life. I will offer you observations about what has worked for me and what has completely flopped when it comes to leadership and management. I’ll give some random thoughts on topics such as why prime numbers are a good choice and how the fibonacci series is so cool. I might attempt to draw the distinction between leadership and management, and offer some thoughts on the differences between the science of management and the art of leadership. And finally, for those readers who work with me or who have worked with me in the past, I hope to will give you an insight into aspects of my life or thoughts that might surprise you.
Thanks for reading my First Post. Hopefully1 I’ll see you back for a second visit soon…
Looking forward to it!
Great post Scotty! You keep writing... I’ll keep reading! Keen to hear your thoughts on the world as your clearly someone who’s thoughtful and thought a lot about what really matters in life.
